A Message From JOHN C. BRAUER, M.A. President and CEO – April 2026

A Bridgerton Take on Inclusion

Gentle Readers,

One of my family’s favorite shows is the series Bridgerton. That got me thinking about how inclusion has evolved over the years, especially for those with disabilities.

In a society not unlike our own, much is often decided by who is seen, who is heard, and who is invited to belong.

For many years, inclusion was measured by access—who was permitted entry and who was offered a place at the table. And while that progress was meaningful, today we are called to something more.

Because true inclusion is not merely about receiving an invitation—it is about being fully welcomed once you arrive.

It is about individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities not simply attending the ball, but taking to the floor—contributing their talents, forming meaningful relationships, and shaping the communities around them.

It means creating:

• Work that reflects one’s strengths and aspirations
• Opportunities for genuine friendships beyond structured settings
• Living environments rooted in independence and choice
• Communities that recognize and celebrate ability first

But as any keen observer of society might note, meaningful change does not happen by chance—it requires intention.

It asks employers to look beyond convention and see possibility.
It asks communities to widen their circles of belonging.
And it asks organizations like ours to continue evolving—removing barriers and creating pathways for opportunity.

At New Horizons, we see each day what is possible when inclusion becomes more than an idea—it becomes a shared expectation. We see individuals gaining confidence, contributing meaningfully, and living lives defined by purpose.

And yet, dear reader, in the words of Bridgerton, the story does not end here. Inclusion is not a passing trend to be admired and forgotten. It is a steadfast commitment—one that we are proud to carry forward together with you.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

Warmly,
John
