New Horizons Selects John C. Brauer As CEO Following Nationwide Search
As a key element in its strategic approach to the agency’s future, the New Horizons Board of Directors has announced the appointment of John C. Brauer as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 11, 2018. A leading Los-Angeles-area-based nonprofit serving the needs of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, New Horizons’ hiring of Brauer caps an intensive nationwide search for a new CEO to guide the organization through a planned expansion of its services and facilities.
Brauer holds a Masters in Clinical Psychology from John F. Kennedy University in California and has more than 27 years of direct experience working with those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other significant challenges. His broad range of experience includes senior management, fundraising and development, board development, strategic planning, government relations, program and social enterprise development, and marketing.
He comes to New Horizons from Union Station Homeless Services in the San Gabriel Valley, where he was CEO. Prior to that, he served as CEO at NW Works, Inc., for 13 years, a Virginia-based nonprofit serving individuals with intellectual and other disabilities. Previous to that, he was CEO of Community Vocational Enterprises, a nonprofit organization located in San Francisco, which supports 400 youth and adults with mental health disabilities each year.
According to John D. Bunzel, New Horizons’ Chairman of the Board: “We are extremely pleased to have an executive of the caliber of John Brauer take the reins of New Horizons. His experience in nonprofit management, and providing services to those with intellectual disabilities specifically, makes him the perfect person to partner with our Board and senior staff in growing New Horizons. Our heartfelt thanks go to Roschell Ashley, who has held the position of interim CEO of New Horizons since January 1, 2017. Her readiness to assume the interim CEO role allowed continuity in New Horizons management to be ensured at all times, and she will remain as the agency’s COO. New Horizons overall goal remains unchanged, to provide quality programs and services for the population we have served for more than sixty years. On behalf of the New Horizons Board, staff, and clients, I would like to extend a warm welcome to John C. Brauer, and wish him a successful start at New Horizons.”
