Local Tech Company Does Business with New Horizons and NeuroDiversity in Mind
With three locations in the Greater Los Angeles area – Culver City, Santa Monica and Woodland Hills, Auticon is an international company, founded by Dirk Müller-Remus to provide high tech services from a unique business model.
In 2007, one of the children of Müller-Remus was diagnosed with autism at the age of 14. During a visit to a self-help group entitled “Autism and Work,” 20 people with autism between the ages of 25 and 50 presented their professional careers. Despite good education, they were all unemployed. In fact, over 85% of all people with autism in Germany are unemployed. For Müller-Remus this realization and the one-sided deficit-oriented public perception of people with autism were the initial spark for the founding of the company. Today, as its mission statement states, Auticon creates as many jobs as possible for adults with autism. In doing so, it is making opportunities available for many of New Horizons’ clients.
Our Employment Services department has been invited to identify our own client participants who are on the autism spectrum and have an interest in technology or some background in the field. After a three point interview process that includes proof of diagnosis, a written essay, and an interview, clients are being hired and trained, given the chance to accelerate in what interests them while making a good salary; some five and six figures.
“Having a former Employment Services Pathways client successfully go through the process of securing a job at the tech company opens the door for others as New Horizons works to get them employed.” says Diego Victorio, New Horizons Employment Services Job Developer.
Auticon calls its workers exceptional, possessing outstanding cognitive strengths that include attention to detail, logical analysis, pattern recognition, error detection, and sustainable concentration for routine activities. At such a time as this, New Horizons looks for even more employers who feel the same about all of our client participants and their abilities.
