As we set our sights on all the possibilities which promise to provide even greater independence and inclusion for the over 1600 individuals we support each year, we celebrate the fact that our programs and services are stronger than ever. Whether on our North Hills campus or at different locations within the community, our ability to bring living, working, and learning opportunities to those with special needs is what New Horizons’ mission is all about. We look forward to continuing to work with our clients in this way. We also look forward to continuing to partner with you through your generous donations and support of our annual events.

The agency’s clients, who have been baking New Horizons chocolate chip cookies for years, are now selling them at the Vons store at 18439 Ventura Blvd. in Tarzana and its sister Pavilions store at 6543 Platt Ave. in West Hills.

Each year the Sunair Children’s Foundation recognizes an employee of a non-profit organization for their dedication to the cause of children and young people, by presenting him or her with a $500 cash award know as “The La Rocca Award.” This year Scott Jones, a member of New Horizons staff, is this the proud recipient of such an honor. Scott has been employed by New Horizons since 2012. He currently works in the agency’s Employment Services Department as a Pathways instructor where he councils individuals with special needs, between the ages of 18 and 22, on how to secure meaningful work within the community.

2015 Walk Around the World Fundraiser Huge Success

On October 25, 2015 New Horizons welcomed friends and family to the North Hills campus for our 8th annual walk event. After being led in the Pledge of Allegiance by New Horizons client and Toastmaster Elizabeth Marton, walkers, who wore cool green tee-shirts, walked some 15 laps around New Horizons’ Workshop and Achievement Center buildings. Together they proved that wherever in the world we are, we can raise money to provide job training, homes, and confidence to people with special needs to help them fulfill their dreams and live better, more independent lives.

Coalition of Service Providers

For nearly seven years, CEO Cynthia Sewell has been a co-convener of the Coalition of Service Providers. Involved are the following organizations: Villa Esperanza Services, ECF, Ability First, Tierra del Sol, UCP, Lincoln Training Center, Valley Village, Easter Seals, Jay Nolan, Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind, CLIMB, Pathpoint, Hope House, The Arc – Los Angeles & Orange Counties, The Arc – Ventura County, and TASC (THE Adult Skills Center). These are among the provider leaders in Southern California. The purpose of the Coalition is to advocate for the programs and services for persons with intellectual and other disabilities.

New Horizons’ Green Light to Mobility (GLM) Program takes a new focus on diversity training, called Cultural Humility. Cultural Humility, as described by Dr. Jann Murray-Garcia and Dr. Melanie Tervalon, is the lifelong process of self-reflection, awareness and critique; simply put, it is the “careful consideration of a person’s assumptions and beliefs, which are embedded in their understanding and interactions with [another person]” (California Health Advocates, 2007).
