While the number of unemployed persons continues to decrease nationwide, the unemployment rate for persons with a disability is more than twice the rate of those with no disability.

As we say good bye to the not-so-lazy days of summer, I am pleased to provide you with an overview of the many happenings here at New Horizons.
They’re the Valley’s most loyal workforce, these dedicated men and women from New Horizons with special needs who work at Von’s, Albertson’s and Jon’s supermarkets in the north Valley.
At a Legislative Thank You Luncheons held on August 7 and again on August 23, California State Assemblymembers Chris Holden (41st District) and Adrin Nazarian (45th District), along with California State Senator Henry Stern (27th District), and Sal Rodriguez, Opinion Editor for the Los Angeles Daily News, were recognized.
On Saturday, November 23, 2019, join our 5K Run, Walk and Roll to support New Horizons’ programs and services!
Since August of 2018, New Horizons, located in North Hills, California, has been offering its Employment Readiness program, creating better opportunities for adults with disabilities through job skills training. This program builds curiosity and empowers individuals for the work force.

October 11, 2018 we’re hiring Direct Support Professionals/Caregivers for weekdays and weekends to assist Residents to succeed in a residential home by teaching them personal living sills and group activities.
As this year’s Direct Support Professionals week was celebrated from September 9 through 14, New Horizons took the time to also acknowledge our staff for the amazing job they do on behalf of our clients all year long.

Twenty-five years ago New Horizons’ client Rowland Woods started working at McDonald’s Restaurant. And it became a match that was made to last. He applied for the job after gaining experience in Sam’s Cafe, the agency’s culinary program and banquet hall. He still remembers the day he started.

We worked as hard as we could to educate and persuade our legislature to pass AB279. But, ultimately, the Senate Appropriations Committee capitulated to a very powerful Governor who declared that he would not allow AB279 to become law.

I want to take a moment during these first few days of 2017 to express how truly excited I am for New Horizons and our clients as we enter into a brand new year!
As we set our sights on all the possibilities which promise to provide even greater independence and inclusion for the over 1600 individuals we support each year, we celebrate the fact that our programs and services are stronger than ever. Whether on our North Hills campus or at different locations within the community, our ability to bring living, working, and learning opportunities to those with special needs is what New Horizons’ mission is all about. We look forward to continuing to work with our clients in this way. We also look forward to continuing to partner with you through your generous donations and support of our annual events.
With New Horizons President and CEO Cynthia Sewell retiring on December 31, 2016, and then assuming a consult role throughout 2017, our Residential Services program wanted to take the time to wish her well with a very well attended BBQ on Sunday, November 20, 2016.
